PhD Fellowships
A) One-year Grant to Start a PhD
The Energy Research Centre of the University of Mons (Faculty of Engineering) offers two one-year grants for outstanding candidates who want to start a PhD thesis in Belgium in the energy related field. Remuneration is in the form of a fellowship, the amount of which is comparable to those offered by Belgian national research granting agencies.
This one-year fellowship aims to allow the candidates to achieve their doctoral training (first year of the doctoral position) and to prepare their application for the FNRS national Belgian competition. The successful candidate will be offered a wider fellowship to complete the PhD.
In addition, we are committed to facilitate learning of French for those who need to.
Applicants must be less than 27 years old.

Available PhD Subjects
- Development of a calculation method for energy performance of heat pumps in existing buildings
- Sedimentology and diagenesis of terrigenous coal rocks in southern Belgium; control over the potential and safety of geological CO2 storage CO2 in order to fight against the emission of greenhouse gases
- Modeling of the geological carboniferous reservoirs
- Development and implementation of the harmonic ALE formulation to study turbomachinery flutter in a multiphysics simulation software
- Solution of radiative transfer equation : study and implementation of the solution method (DOM or FVM) in a multiphysics simulation code taking into account the spectral aspect of radiation
- Optimization in DC/DC or DC/AC high performance and "coreless" converter topologies
- Use of multiple feedback loops in DC/DC converters as optimization method of their physical and dynamic performances
- CFD-multizone approach with detailed combustion model for accurate prediction of thermal efficiency and Nox emissions of high temperature industrial furnaces
- Matrix power converters for auxiliary equipments supply in railways
- Optimization of the control of the compressor speed of capacity-controlled heat pumps integrated in dwellings
- Study and implementation of predictive control of heat pumps integrated in dwellings in function of outdoor climate
- Optimization of the design and the sizing of thermal storage systems used in thermal integrated systems
- Development of a 1-D dynamic model for heat pumps and of its control system
